How does one become a police officer? Im really want to but have no idea where to start!

I am 23 years old and female.

What are the first steps?

What type of training do I need?

What are the educational requirements?

What state are you in? The first thing you should do is find out if you meet the minimum qualifications of the department or departments that you would like to work for. If you do, then you can apply. If it or they are big departments, they will probably have the information you need on their website. If you don't meet their minimum qualifications, then you have to try to do what you can to meet, or better yet, exceed them, and then apply. If you get hired by a big department, they will usually send you to the police academy. As far as education goes, you might need a high school diploma or GED, or you might need some college or even a college degree.

Do you need to pay for the academy or will the department put you through it?

According to their website, the Houston Police Department is hiring. Their educational requirements for police officer candidates is at least 60 semester hours of college. Below are the phases in their hiring process. If you complete the process, and are selected, they would send you to the police academy, and pay you while you attended.

1.
-Applicant submits on-line application and assigned to a recruiter
OR
-Applicant comes to recruiting office

2.
-Applicant fills out pre-screening questionnaire
-Applicant's height and weight are measured
-Walk-in applicants fill out city application
-Applicant fills out screening checklist, data entry form, then interviewed
-Physical agility test (must have release forms completed before test is given)
-Fingerprints and photos
-Given additional paperwork and list of documents to return
-Applicant completes polygraph questionnaire

3.
-Conditional job offer
-Polygraph examination
-Final interview
-Assigned for background investigation

4.
-Medical Examination & Drug Testing
-Physiological Testing and Evaluation
-Applicant's file forwarded to chief of police for approval

The state of Texas only requires peace officers to have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency certificate. But the majority of the police departments in Texas require some college. You can pay your own way through the Texas Basic Peace Officer Course. I would try to get hired by a big city and let them pay!
