Yes, most if not all departments run a polygraph.
Not sure about this, but they probably do ask about gambling.
But I wouldn't worry about it.
The biggest thing to worry about is the fact that you stole while
being an adult. I also stole a couple of CDs from Walmart, but I
was 15 and this was 8 years ago.
The fact that you stole 2 years ago when you were 23 could be
disqualifying.
My advice is to finish your education because departments prefer
for people to finish school first before applying; this is because
it is strenuous to be in the police academy and going to school
at the same time.
When you finish your education you will have a better chance because
the older you get the more time passes between then and when
you stole those DVDs.

BTW, I am not a cop, but I am looking to apply in the fall.

Most police departments would not hire you if you have stolen something only two years ago. That seems like your biggest problem. Getting fired from Wal-Mart for stealing, even if it was six years ago, will probably also be a problem. It could certainly keep you from becoming a police officer any time soon. My best advice is to continue improving what you can. Keep volunteering. Try to stay with the same organization for as long as you can. Finish your degree, then continue on, and get a four year degree if you can. Even if it takes a long time. Be patient. I would consider a different major if you get a four year degree. Keep your credit score high. I would definitely keep one or two credit accounts with a small balance. Keep paying on time though! Not every department requires your to pass a polygraph test, but many do. If the gambling you did was legal, it shouldn't be a problem for you. I would try to get the best job you can as soon as you can, and keep that job for a while. After eight more years, then try to become a police officer. You would still be young enough, and you would probably have a much better chance of getting hired.

In a few years you might have a chance. It might help that you are a female.
