Situational question _
PostSubject: Situational question   Situational question EmptyTue Dec 07, 2010 2:33 pm

I was wondering what would a police officer do in this situation (obviously something would have to be done). You are the only officer working/able to handle calls and the call you currently are dealin with is a DUI. During this call you receive a call about a robbery in progress.

Would you call for backup from a neighboring department to go to that scene? Call for backup to handle the DUI suspect and then you go to the scene with other officers?

I was curious to see if you are permitted to let someone else handle the DUI case to withdraw blood, etc. even though you were the original officer who had p.c.

THANKS!

This is an example of a question that you might be asked during an oral board. Legally, you are able to let another officer process the suspect from a DUI arrest. Unless department policy prohibits this, it would be fine. Many neighboring departments can handle each others' calls when requested. Often, a neighboring department would respond to the robbery call and handle it until you could unload your DUI suspect or until a detective or another officer from your department could respond. Again, this depends on department policy.

Depends on the particulars. If we have a DUI suspect and a high priority call comes in almost always the department from the town beside us handles it until we get there. Sometimes the state police or county sheriff's office will handle it until we get there.
