Is there better chance for advancement in a big police department or a smaller one? I know there are more positions in bigger departments, but there are also more officers going for the promotions right?

Your chances for advancement are almost always better in a large department.

YOUR THINKING SEEMS LOGICAL, BUT I AGREE WITH JAMES2. GO WITH A LARGE DEPARTMENT. THERE ARE MORE ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND MORE VARIETY OF ASSIGNMENTS.

It's all about the right place at the right time. Who you know can also help, especially in some smaller departments.

I would try to get hired by a large police department.

There are almost always more opportunities in a big department, but you should try to get hired by whatever department you can. Good luck!
